Just about everyone makes a New Year’s resolution, whether it’s to get active, save money or break a bad habit. This year, make a resolution you are excited to keep! When your garage is well-organized, you don’t have to waste energy looking for what should be easy to find and you can finally get a head start on projects you’ve had on your to-do list for months. Here are some easy steps to make 2014 the Year of the Well-Organized Garage:

STEP ONE: CLEAN

Start by giving the garage (and everything in it) a thorough cleaning, and wipe down the floor or re-paint the walls.

STEP TWO: SORT

Take inventory of what’s in your garage. Know what tools you have, group items according to their purpose and how frequently you use them (make sure the blue handles are easy to reach)! Exercise the mantra “out with the old, in with the new” and select a few items to add to a “donate” or “trash” bin. Make a shopping list for what you need.

STEP THREE: STORAGE

Take advantage of the storage space available in your garage. Try to utilize walls, drawers and ceilings. Garages are a great place to work on your projects when you have the space – just remember to leave room for your car!

STEP FOUR: MAINTAIN

Set aside time once a month to regroup and assess the organization of your garage. It’s a lot easier to put things away as you go, rather than starting over at square one.

Here’s to a great 2014!
